Leadership 101

There are thousands of articles and books written on the topic of leadership. There are thousands of gurus espousing they have the answer on how to be a leader. There are also a variety of leadership seminars, and a host of trainings you can attend. I have read, listened to, and participated in my share of training, studied leadership across the world, but, in the end, it all boils down to this reality:  There are only four elements needed to be an effective leader!

First, the leader must have a vision! Having a vision means being able to openly state one’s aims and purpose, then constantly demonstrate a commitment to the vision in a way people can understand and believe. Leaders must explain their vision in simplistic terms to get the necessary buy-in;

Secondly, the leader must get everybody involved in pursuing the vision, and make them feel they are an important part of the process. Leaders must create a climate in which individuals can act on their own to get things done without the threat of being penalized. This is important for EVERYONE on the payroll!

Thirdly, the leader must listen to what people are saying, then act accordingly. Listen to everybody—employees, customers, contractors, and so forth.  Leaders like to hear their own voice. They are accustomed to issuing directives and having them carried out. However, listening is a way to absorb new information, and act on it. People must feel free to generate ideas, and free to exchange them.

Finally, the leader must follow-through. Persistence is probably the single most important characteristic a leader can have, but it is also the one that leaders often fail at because it takes lots of energy to persist through to the end and follow-through. If you promise to do something, deliver on that promise! If you cannot follow-through, be honest, and at least let the person know why you will not be able to live up to the commitment. Persistence is the key distinguishing characteristic between a good leader and a great leader.

So, no matter what you read or hear, these four concepts are always present. If you keep them in mind, you will be far, far ahead of those we perceive to be outstanding leaders.

Again, here are the basics:

1.  Have a vision!

2.  Involve others in pursuing that vision!

3.  Listen to what people have to contribute, and act accordingly;

4. If you promise, DELIVER!
